On Adulting

A teacher at our town's early college asked me to speak to his class of sophomores yesterday.  The theme was overcoming obstacles and hardships, and in some ways, finding your story in the midst of it. But it sort of became almost a chance to share lessons learned.  He shared this with them earlier, and later me... and I love it so much.  All of it got me thinking about what I've learned in 33 years, and maybe what I wish some person had told me as I was trying to figure out who I was and wasn't.   Here's my manifesto from where I stand these days.  I said some of this to the students yesterday, but there's a lot more here than what I thought to say then. I guess the thing is that what I believe now has changed an awful lot, and I'm glad.


  •  Find the courage to be who you really are, which may not look like anything people would imagine for you. Don't let anyone but you define who you are.  At the end of the day, you're the one who has to stand in the mirror and live with the choices you made that day.  Do things that make you proud.  Aim to do things that leave you with no regrets.  
  • Recognize that some people will love you for being true to yourself.  Some will despise you for it.  Some will be jealous of you.  But the ones who matter will respect you for it. 
  • Don't be afraid to make mistakes.  When you stop making mistakes, it doesn't mean that you are perfect.  It means you're simply living in a comfort zone where you have quit being challenged.
  • Surround yourself with people who love you enough to challenge you, push you, and call you out on your stuff when you need it. You do not need a gaggle of "yes men".  What you do need are people that will help you become. 
  • Pay attention to the people who show up in your life.  There's a reason they are there.  Allow them to be whatever it is they are supposed to be for you.  
  • Don't suppose that you are always the expert.  If someone knows more than you do or is better at something than you are, learn as much as you can from them.  Especially learn from their mistakes.  But make it your goal to be an expert on one thing, and work diligently at achieving it. 
  • Set ridiculous goals for yourself.  When people tell you they are ridiculous or that you aren't capable, prove them wrong. Do things you believe are impossible. 
  • Show up for your life.  Decide that you matter, that your health matters, that your happiness matters.  Don't stand on the stand-lines.
  • Take care of your body.  Start right now.  You only get one, and while a lot of things can be fixed, it's always better to be proactive rather than reactive. Choose right now that you will be a credit to your age.  Decide that you are still going to be able to do amazing things when you are old. Don't let yourself be a statistic. 
  • Don't be lukewarm.  When do you something, do it passionately. Know what it is to master your craft.  Don't stop there.
  • Don't settle.  Refuse to accept mediocrity. Don't skate by.  Don't "phone it in".  Ever. 
  • Learn to take a hit.  Learn to stand back up, no matter what.  Don't get knocked down by the same thing again. 
  • Realize that you don't have to have it all figured out today.  Don't be afraid to yell "do over" when you need to, but make sure you do it better the next time around. 
  • Stay quiet when you have nothing to say. But when you know that you know something, the world needs to hear your voice.  And it might be your words that finally reach that one person. 
  • Accept the fact that there is after all, a certain poetic fluidity to life. Some things are beyond your control, and that's ok.  Some things, many things, will change. You will change. That's ok too. 
  • Let your word mean something. Show, don't tell,  the world who you really are. People will say bad things about you.  Let them. But live in such a way that an army of people would quickly speak up to defend you. 
  • Don't be afraid to set out on your own. Be courageous enough to carve out your own path.  Go where the wild things are.  At least one time, do something that allows you to see that you really can stand on your own two feet.  Do something that scares you.  Do something that proves your strength, even if it's only to you.

I don't know that this list is exhaustive, but I do know that it's true.  These are my rules for living, at least right now.  What are yours?

Yes, I did! (And so can you!)

A lot of people have watched me change over the last few years, and they've wanted to know how I did it, and what it's been like.  This is my story.  It's long, but so was the process.  I feel weird telling it, but I know it also gives me an understanding of what people that try to lose weight are going through. When I started getting serious about losing weight, I saw a sign that said "Because of you I didn't quit." I've had my own people that have made me believe in "more", but I know that everyone needs at least one person like that.  So, I'm sharing my story, not because of what I've done, but because it's proof that we get to change our stories.   Here's the thing.  If that girl can do it, you can too.

             I was 32 the day I remember first (and finally!) seeing my collar bones.    I guess I must’ve had them, but a marshmallow girl—who could’ve passed for the Michelin man’s girlfriend-- ate them… along with my abs, my neck, my hands, my butt.  Actually, come to think of it,  she just ate everything.


            Which I guess is how she woke up one day weighing 250 lbs, barely squeezing herself into a size 22.

            It’s a lot easier to say “she” as if “I” am at a safe distance telling this story about someone else.   Let me try again.  I woke up to weigh 250lbs.  I am the one who bought size 22 clothes that were too tight, because I just couldn’t face the truth that I was really a size 24.  I  am the one who tried to numb myself with food, because it was easier than naming and dealing with the pain of a bad marriage and worse job. I am the one who tried to make myself run, even though I nearly cried every time I walked because of blown out knees, because it was all I knew to do.  I’d see smiling, skinny girls in spandex running, and I’d tell myself that if I could only look like that,  I’d be happy too.

            Only no part of me believed it was possible. I was heavy even as a kid.  But then again, I’m also the one who was conveniently “sick” every single time we had to do the Presidential Fitness Test.  I’m the one who tried out for and made my middle school soccer team, and then faked ankle injuries every time we had to run.  I went to college and thought somehow it would magically get better,  but then I found myself telling the girl in my brain “Just don’t let the scale get over 180”,  while I (true story) lived on kool-aid and oreos for the week before finals. By time I got to graduate school, it was “220 isn’t so bad.”  Then a few years later, it was so bad, I didn’t weigh myself for a whole year.

            It’s not like I didn’t try.  I cut out every workout I’d see in Shape and Fitness.  I bought the whole set of weights from The Firm.  I tried every diet you could name.  I did Atkins,  The Zone Diet, South Beach, even The Grapefruit Diet.  I, impressively, found a way to gain weight while following Weight Watchers.   When I look back, I half-heartedly laugh at my attempts.  Because, truth, I when I look at all the time and money I spent on the right water bottle or clothes that I thought would motivate me or gimmicky things, if I didn’t laugh, I’d get really angry at myself.

            In 2012, things began to change.  I moved to a new town, and decided I was done with that whole life.  I was coming here to make a change.  There’s a quote that says “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear”, which is the best way I know to describe what happened. I became friends with a flannel-clad contractor who was doing some work on my house.  I made some muffins one afternoon, and offered him one.  He gave me a sideways grin, and said “I have to watch my girlish figure.”  I later found out that he was not only a personal trainer, but that he had 40 years of experience doing it.  I’d ask him small things like, you know, what I could do to not cry when I walked.  When I told him that doctors had told me I’d never be able to squat past 30 degrees, he laughed.  Ok, so that pissed me off, but he started showing me things I could do.  And he explained why I’d come to find the doctors’ statements the dumbest thing I’d ever heard.

            He came to me one day and told me he wanted to train me.  I listened politely, and then equally politely, told him “thanks but no thanks.”  But then when he left, I had a not so polite conversation with myself about the commitment I had made to really change myself.   I ate a piece of humble pie, which come to think of it, is the only pie I’ve had in three years—but I’ve eaten a lot of it.  Anyway, we set a time to start.  And I tried to cancel on him.  Because in the hour prior to our session, I was so keyed up that I was about to puke.  I was terrified I couldn’t do it.  More terrified that he’d see me jiggle.  But in 40 years of doing this, I guess he learned not to put up with BS excuses.  I lost that battle.  Two days later, in twelve minutes, he put me on the mat.  With 5lb dumbbells.  I found a hand gesture to tell him he was number one.  Well, I would’ve if I’d had the energy to lift my finger.

            Nearly three years later, The Michelin Man’s Girlfriend doesn’t exist.  She’s been replaced with a Size 6 smiling girl in spandex,  who decided to show the hell up for her life, and has lost over 100lbs.   That flannel clad trainer—who turns out to be 59 has taught me a lot.  For the record, the most impressive thing I learned was what is possible when you make it a lifestyle.  The first time I saw him in a tank top… well, there just aren’t words.  Let’s just leave it at “inspirational.” But in all seriousness, he has taught me what my body could really do—and how to get out of my comfort zone, and out of my own way, so that I could.  He’s taught me to eat.  I couldn’t have told you what fats, carbohydrates and proteins did, or how to put them together in a way that would help me achieve my goals.  I couldn’t even have told you how many calories I needed to eat for what I wanted to do.  He taught me what it means to persevere when I (really) wanted to quit.  He taught me how to dig deep and leave everything in the gym.  And true to his word, he fixed my knees.  I can squat and deadlift and leg press, and generally do everything I want to do.  And I bust parallel.  Every time.    One day he asked me to pick one goal for the gym.  Without hesitating, I told him I wanted to do a real-hands-forward-chin-clears-the-bar pull up.   At 33, I couldn’t have been prouder when I went up smooth like butta, and felt my chin all the way above the bar.
            This has been the hardest thing I’ve done.  I have been pushed harder than I wanted to go.  I’ve cried.  I’ve whined.  I’ve changed my whole lifestyle to do this.  I’ve gone from the girl who faked injuries to get out of exercise to being completely passionate about it.  In fact, it means so much to me that I changed careers to be a personal trainer. I’ve never been happier, or felt as good or had as much energy as I do now.   I’m not quite where I want to be, but now I know I’ll never go back.  I’ll never settle.  And I’ll never stop.  I will keep pushing myself and challenging myself, and in turn shape my body and mind. 

Because one person took the time to teach me, and wouldn’t let me quit on myself, I’m someone I never thought I could be.  

            Let me do the same for you.  Because feeling good in your skin is pretty much the best feeling.  Well, except maybe shamelessly wearing a bikini at the beach.  



PS-- Here's the "inspirational" trainer... seriously, he's 59.  And he busts parallel every time, too.  And his biceps are considerably bigger than mine, so I try to do what he says.

Be Stronger Than Your Excuses


I can think of a whole host of reasons not to go to the gym, not to drink enough water, not to watch what I eat.  I can justify with the best of them, but in the end, all these reasons just do one thing: keep me from reaching my goal of being the healthiest, happiest me. (And err... you know... having the body I've always wanted.)

Some times I have to dig out my favorite workout tank and let it do the lecturing reminding. "Be stronger than your excuses" it happily chirps at me when I want to settle for anything less than my best effort.

I've been thinking a lot about motivation and will power lately, and about why some people will succeed at reaching their fitness goals and others won't quite ever make it.   I've even started reading a book called The Marshmallow Test. (Review forthcoming, promise! But it's been a fascinating read so far.) One of the strategies thus far presented for dealing with temptation is to make a plan for what you are going to do when temptation strikes.  Yeah, yeah, you've heard that one before.  If you were a child of the 80's, you learned that in the D.A.R.E. classes you had to take. But most of us don't think about applying that to things we allow to sabotage us in regards to our health.

What would happen if we made a list of all our best excuses? If you're the artsy sort, draw them as little monsters.

And then what would happen if we made a list of come-backs to tell ourselves when the little monsters started talking to us.


Here are some of the best excuses I've either used or heard (and my own come-backs). I won't lie-- it's kind of a tough love list.
I don't have time! Do you have time to be in the hospital or dead? And you spend how long playing games on facebook? One hour is 4% of your day... you can't find that?
I can't afford a gym membership or a trainer! It cost's too much money to eat well!  But you can afford a fancy handbag? Invest in your health-- it's going to be around a lot longer than most of the purchases you think you can't live without. Besides, a gym membership and a trainer combined probably cost less than a plethora of doctors visits and prescriptions...
I'm too tired! Part of the reason you're tired is that you're not getting any exercise, and you're eating crappy food that doesn't fuel your body properly. 
I don't believe in lifting weights! Do you believe in having joint pain because the muscles surrounding the joints aren't strong enough to do their job? Do you believe in having really bad posture because your back isn't strong enough to hold you upright? Do you believe in burning a few hundred calories while you're on the treadmill, or burning them all day long--even while you're sleeping?
I walk every day! Good for you, but this doesn't get your heartrate high enough or burn enough calories to do the things you are hoping it will. 
I can't remember to drink water or I don't like it! That's fine.  Slow your metabolism down, have little energy, increase your blood pressure, and all sorts of other nasty things.  How's that water sound now?
I don't want to have to sacrifice eating things I love!  Good nutrition involves eating a variety of things, and everything in moderation and in balance with your body's needs.  It doesn't mean that you have to live on celery! 
I don't want anyone to see me jiggle in the gym. (This one seriously almost kept me from darkening a gym...ever.) Better jiggle in the gym for a while than jiggle every where you go!  Besides, getting healthy is not about what any one else thinks of you! And truth-- most people will see that you're working hard and you will inspire them. 

Ok, so what are your best excuses?

Here's another one of my favorites:  I'm too old.

Ok, but tell that to this guy, who is one of my clients.  (And who is pictured curling 8lb dumbbells like a champ.) Yeah, he's 99.


What ever your excuses are, I hope you'll find a way to show yourself (and others) that you are so much stronger than even the strongest excuse!
